Sadanand Shirke
2008
Overview
Sadanand employs vinyl on composite aluminium board, applying coloured strips and marking the surface with a scalpel to construct abstract compositions of Mumbai cityscapes.
With clear references towards Minimalism and the geometric constructions of modernist painters Joseph Albers and Kazimir Malevich, the artist is able draw these influences into a specifically local and contemporary context.
He creates compositions and spaces resembling the Mumbai cityscapes that are comprised of buildings and construction sites. His colour palette reminds us of the hoarding choked, neon-bright parts of the city through which he breaks the monotony of the cement greys and earthy colours of Mumbai. The large surface area of his works creates the concept of space that his work brings out.
