About
Chatterjee & Lal was formed in 2003 by Mortimer Chatterjee and Tara Lal.
After 18 years situated close to the Gateway of India in the Colaba area of Mumbai, the gallery relocated in late 2025 to Horniman Circle, an iconic crescent of buildings located in the historic Fort precinct of the city.
The gallery represents leading contemporary artists and designers, Estates of senior practitioners active in the 20th century and, more recently, has become a licensed dealer of registered antiquities. Regular research-based group exhibitions provide context to the gallery’s programme of solo artist shows.
Chatterjee & Lal is also an established and trusted name for its art advisory services, providing help for individuals and major corporate art collections on valuations, display and collection-building strategies, as well as art-related publications. Clients include the Taj Group of Hotels, the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Hindustan Unilever, and the Jamshyd and Pheroza Godrej Collection.
The directors are published authors, regularly sharing insights on art across national and international publications. In 2022, they were instrumental in producing a groundbreaking two-volume publication on modern and contemporary art, Moving Focus, India.
