SUMMARY:Paving The Way : An Exhibition by Bharat Floorings and Tiles
DESCRIPTION:PAVING THE WAY IS AN EXHIBITION OF RARE ARCHIVAL MATERIAL CELEBRATING THE INDIAN TILING INDUSTRY\n\nThe past few years have been witness to a plethora of conversations and exhibitions around the architectural diversity of Mumbai. This narrative\, unfortunately\, is incomplete and excludes another\, less-documented area: the interiors of the city’s iconic buildings which were as stylized as the exterior. Flooring and tiles\, whether industrial or hand-crafted\, have added to the character\, heritage\, and utility of the structures they were laid down for.\n\n\nWhat role did tiles play while designing a space? How did different patterns align to the wide variety in architectural styles? How were they made and what ensured their durability? What were the popular colours and patterns? Curated from archival material sourced from the archive of the Bharat Flooring Tiles\, this exhibition attempts to answer these questions\, spark a discussion around the floors we walk on every single day\, and expose audiences to the nuances of the tiling industry.

SUMMARY:Nasreen Mohamedi (1937 – 1990) | Here\, It Is Still
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition presents select work by Nasreen Mohamedi encompassing a period of over twenty-five years. There is a concentration on her late line drawings – the austere graphite and ink works she executed shortly before her death in 1990. \nNasreen Mohamedi trained both in London and Paris before returning to India in the early 1960s. There are two small drawings and one collage in the exhibition that date from this period; they exhibit a looser line than is evident in works from the 1970s onwards. Having moved to Baroda to teach\, the last twenty years of the artist’s output would see a turn to the use of architectural drawing tools in order to produce geometric compositions. From the dizzying complexity of the 1970s\, an ever-increasing economy of line is evident through 1980s. \nThis coincides with the period in which Nasreen’s health deteriorated\, making it ever harder for her to control line. There is one vintage photographic print included in this exhibition. Photography seems to have been a constant interest through much of the artist’s career\, although the extant vintage prints are difficult to date precisely. \nNasreen Mohamedi (1937 – 1990) was an artist and educator\, active from the early 1960s until her early death in 1990. Recognised during her lifetime as a leading abstractionist of her generation\, her legacy has only grown since her death. Nasreen Mohamedi’s works have been exhibited at The Kiran Nadar Museum of Art\, Delhi; The Metropolitan Museum\, New York; The Guggenheim Museum\, New York; Tate Liverpool; and The Reina Sofia in Madrid.
