The body of work draws inspiration from life outside the country’s metropolises, in particular the small and medium sized towns of Gujarat. As has been the case since the beginning of her career, Bhatt uses her body as the site of art production.
The works that make up the show are highly complex in their use both of reality and artifice. The artist has reconstructed photographs that she took whilst researching this project, with the subject in each based upon an actual inhabitant of the town. The resulting works subtly blur the lines between painting, installation, performance and photography.
Bhatt’s use of imagery from her own ancestral town gives her a natural insight into the lives and concerns of those that live there and, as such, the works attain a high degree of empathy with those subjects chosen for this body of work.
